6 Tips to Avoid Procrastination

You may be thinking that you have tried everything, set goals, made a time table, but nothing has worked yet. But is procrastination, ignoring work to the extent that it starts becoming a pain has become your habit? Why do you avoid things that are important? Let's see these 6 Tips to Avoid Procrastination.

Because, these could well mean the biggest difference between success and failure!

Tip 1 – Avoid Procrastinating

Avoid avoiding the work. Do it. Get over and done with it!

Tip 2 – Break Up

If a piece of work is big and you do not wish to spend much time, then try simplifying it by dividing it into small parts. You will immediately see that the same task will then seem easy.

Tip 3 - Zeigarnik Effect

For this tip, let's understand the Zeigarnik effect. During memory training, it’s used to remember names, faces and languages.

A psychiatrist, Dr. Zeigarnik, was once sitting in some café on her Europe tour. There she observed how easily waiters were able to remember the orders they took. When she further noticed, she found that the waiter remembers the order only till it has been delivered. They then close that process (loop) right there and of course also forget it! This effect is named after her as the Zeigarnik effect.

How can you apply it to yourself?

Well, it’s simple! Whenever you start with a task, remember to focus on that task alone. Try and complete that loop alone. This way, there won’t be any delays or reason to procrastinate.

Tip 4 – Self Pity

The study of self pity shows that when you are harsh on yourself for not doing a particular and/or necessary work, abuse yourself verbally or even physically, then it will help you the next time, beware that it won't be so. It may well have the opposite effect.

Whereas, when you show kindness to yourself, you are more likely to do that or other work well.

Tip 5 – Figure out the Why

To keep up our morale and reason to do something, we must consider one aspect. Understand Why is that something to be done.

Identify the Why (Reason). Just visualise all the achievements that you will make from doing that something, the benefits. Then see if Not Doing it is going to harm you in anyways! What’s most critical is to understand that Result will be achieved only when you know the Reason of doing it.

Tip 6 - 5 Second Rule

Mel Robbins, a renowned motivational speaker, created the concept of 5 Second Rule, which states:

If you have a goal or a task to do, then you have to start working on it within 5 seconds, otherwise your brain will find some way or the other not to do it.

Conclusion

The mantra for success is that when you are determined, think about everything that you have to do and also set a goal. But if you do not do that work with your hands, then that will be termed as Procrastination).
